Keynote Announced
Keynote address by Professor Nick Harvey
Professor Nick Harvey is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Adelaide. Nick is one of the 5 Australian lead authors on the Australia and New Zealand Chapter of the IPCC, Working Group II report on climate change impacts and vulnerability and he is the only IPCC lead author from South Australia. Last year the IPCC won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Al Gore.
Nick has experience working for the South Australian Government (1984-1991), has planning qualifications and won a medal in 1994 from the then Royal Australian Planning Institute for his research on the role of environmental impact assessment in planning. He has served on the South Australian Coast Protection Board, the Major Developments Panel and is currently on the Executive Steering Committee for the next State of the Environment Report for South Australia.
Nick has had a long involvement with scientific global change research. He was Vice-Chair of the international scientific steering committee for LOICZ (Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone) from 1997-2002 which is the peak body examining the effect of global change on the world's coastlines. Nick was one of the authors on the LOICZ book Coastal Fluxes in the Anthropocene. He is currently Chair of the international START-Oceania committee dealing with global change research and training. He has written over 150 scientific papers and books including his latest book Global Change and Integrated Coastal Management in the Asia-Pacific Region, published by Springer in 2006. He also has expertise in coastal management and co-authored a book on Coastal Management in Australia (Oxford University Press). He is currently on the Australian Government Advisory Committee on Coastal Vulnerability.
