NZAIA is an NGO set up to promote and support impact assessment practice in New Zealand and the Pacific region. It was formally incorporated as NZAIA in 1998, but existed before that as a social impact network dating from the 1980s. Our membership comprises practitioners of many kinds, academics, researchers and students, and other assorted professionals and interested parties. We all share a deep interest in impact assessment, a decision-support method that is one of the most important tools we have for safeguarding the environment.
Impact assessment for us means the process of examining the potential implications of proposed actions (be they project, plan or policy actions) for the natural environment, for people, their health and wellbeing, and their social, cultural and economic activities and values -- with particular emphasis on the unanticipated impacts. That analysis is then used to modify proposals, to inform final decisions about proposals, and to inform impact management plans.
In New Zealand, the AEE process under the RMA is the most common form of impact assessment that people encounter (often called environmental impact assessment overseas), but other forms of impact assessment are also practised in this country: social impact assessment, health impact assessment, cultural impact assessment, ecological impact assessment, regulatory impact assessment, and so forth.
NZAIA is a community of impact assessment specialists and supporters. We organise conferences, often aimed at specific resource or activity sectors, such as transport infrastructure, urban growth, and energy. We make submission on proposed legislation that may have implications for impact assessment in this country. And we provide an easy way into the international practitioner community, as we are the New Zealand affiliate of the International Association for Impact Assessment.
I'm pleased to welcome you to our website. If you are not able to find what you want, please get in touch with me and I will try to provide the appropriate information.
